Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has been headed by several ministers since independence, with successive administrations introducing policies and reforms aimed at improving access to education, quality assurance, teacher development, tertiary education, skills acquisition and infrastructure.
In the Fourth Republic alone, the ministry has had a succession of ministers with different professional backgrounds, including academics, educationists, lawyers, journalists, administrators and politicians.
The current Minister of Education is Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, who assumed office in October 2024 following the removal of Professor Tahir Mamman during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle. Here are 10 notable former Ministers of Education who served before Alausa.
1. Fabian Osuji
Professor Fabian Ngozichukwu Chinedum Osuji served as Minister of Education from July 2003 to March 2005 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Before entering government, Osuji had an extensive academic career in biological sciences. He taught at the University of Ibadan, where he rose from lecturer to senior lecturer and associate professor in the Department of Zoology.
His tenure ended in March 2005 when President Obasanjo dismissed him amid a controversy over alleged bribery linked to the 2005 education budget. Osuji denied the allegations and subsequently faced investigation.
He was succeeded by Professor Chinwe Obaji.
2. Chinwe Obaji
Professor Chinwe Obaji became Minister of Education in June 2005 and served until June 2006.
An academic and education administrator, Obaji had previously worked as a lecturer and administrator at Michael Okpara College of Agriculture in Imo State.
She was appointed to head the Federal Ministry of Education following Osuji’s departure and was succeeded by Obiageli Ezekwesili.
3. Obiageli ‘Oby’ Ezekwesili
Obiageli Ezekwesili became Minister of Education in June 2006 after previously serving as Minister of Solid Minerals.
Her tenure focused on education-sector reforms and efforts to reposition the ministry around national and international education targets. The World Bank later appointed her Vice-President for the Africa Region in 2007.
Ezekwesili remains one of Nigeria’s most internationally recognised former education ministers and has continued to play a prominent role in public policy and advocacy.
4. Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu
Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu served as Minister of Education from July 2007 to December 2008 under former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
He had a background in education and public service, having worked as an education officer and mathematics teacher before moving into university teaching and politics.
His tenure ended in December 2008 when he was succeeded by Sam Egwu.
5. Sam Egwu
Dr Sam Ominyi Egwu served as Minister of Education from December 2008 to March 2010 during the administration of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the early months of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
Before becoming a federal minister, Egwu served as Governor of Ebonyi State from 1999 to 2007. He also had an academic background and previously served as Commissioner for Education in the state.
His tenure at the federal ministry coincided with significant disputes between the government and university workers, including industrial actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
6. Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa’i
Professor Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa’i became Minister of Education in April 2010 and served until September 2013.
An educationist and academic, Rufa’i studied History at Bayero University, Kano, obtained a master’s degree from the same institution and later earned a PhD in Education from West Virginia University in the United States.
She served during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and was succeeded by Nyesom Wike in 2013.
7. Nyesom Wike
Nyesom Wike, the current Governor of Rivers State, served in the Federal Ministry of Education before becoming Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
He was appointed Minister of State for Education in July 2011. Following Rufa’i’s departure in September 2013, Wike became the Supervising Minister of Education, effectively overseeing the ministry until July 2014.
He was subsequently succeeded by Ibrahim Shekarau.
8. Ibrahim Shekarau
Malam Ibrahim Shekarau served as Minister of Education from July 2014 until 2015.
Before joining the Federal Executive Council, Shekarau had spent years in education and public administration. He worked as a mathematics teacher and later became a two-term Governor of Kano State.
He was appointed to the federal cabinet towards the end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and remained in office until the transition to the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
9. Adamu Adamu
Mallam Adamu Adamu became Minister of Education in November 2015 under former President Muhammadu Buhari and remained in office until May 2023.
With a background in journalism and accounting, Adamu served throughout Buhari’s eight-year presidency, making him one of the longest-serving education ministers of Nigeria’s recent democratic era.
His tenure covered major developments and controversies in the education sector, including university funding, ASUU strikes, examination reforms, student loans and efforts to expand access to tertiary education.
He was succeeded by Professor Tahir Mamman after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
10. Tahir Mamman
Professor Tahir Mamman became Minister of Education in August 2023 under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A lawyer, academic and former Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Mamman served as education minister until 23 October 2024, when President Tinubu removed him from office during a cabinet reshuffle.
His tenure included major policy debates, particularly over the proposed minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions and reforms affecting Nigeria’s education system.
He was succeeded by Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa.
