Nigeria has maintained its position as a major source of international students in the United States, ranking seventh globally and leading in Africa, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange.
The U.S. Embassy announced on Tuesday that 20,029 Nigerian students enrolled in American colleges and universities during the 2023/2024 academic year. This marks a 13.5% increase from the previous year, underscoring the growing demand for U.S. education among Nigerians.
The report, released during International Education Week, highlighted that U.S. institutions now host a record 1,126,690 international students, the highest number in history. Nigerian students form a significant portion of this population, recognized for their academic achievements and contributions to higher education.
More than 55% of Nigerian students in the U.S. are enrolled in graduate programs, enriching the cultural and academic environment of American universities. The milestone also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Open Doors Report, which is published by the Institute of International Education in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State.
Sub-Saharan Africa remains the fastest-growing region for international education, with a 13% increase in student mobility in 2023/2024, following an 18% rise the previous year. Nigeria’s increasing enrollment highlights the robust educational ties between the two countries, further strengthened by cross-cultural exchanges aimed at fostering mutual understanding and collaboration.
The U.S. Embassy described this growth as a testament to the enduring educational partnership between the U.S. and Nigeria, which continues to inspire future leaders and promote global learning opportunities.
