With the theme “Innovating for Space Sustainability,” Great Heights Academy, Abuja distinguished itself in the Sustainable Living in Space category at the International Space and STEAM FunFest 2025.
The academy’s students presented an ambitious project titled Hydroponic Greenhouse in Space, featuring a hexagonal prototype designed to tackle one of the greatest challenges of long-duration space missions: producing food without soil.
Their system integrates hydroponics, plant science, smart automation, structural engineering, and sustainable design to provide astronauts with a renewable supply of fresh food, oxygen, and efficient water recycling.
More than a prototype, the project is a practical demonstration of how Nigerian students are applying Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) to solve global problems in space science and sustainability.
Through creativity, discipline, and forward thinking, Great Heights Academy has illustrated the possibilities of sustainable space missions and inspired a vision for the future.
The achievement highlights the readiness of the next generation to shape both the future of space exploration and solutions to challenges on Earth.
As we continue to showcase outstanding student innovations from the International Space and STEAM FunFest 2025, we call on educators, parents, and industry leaders to support and nurture these bright minds preparing for tomorrow’s discoveries.
