The management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree (OSPOLY), has suspended the ongoing Final Year Brethren (FYB) celebrations on campus, citing disorderliness among students.
The decision, announced on Monday, 8 September 2025, was contained in an internal memorandum from the Office of the Registrar, reference number REG.20/VOLIV/193.
The FYB celebration, a long-standing tradition among final-year students, was reportedly marred by unruly behaviour, prompting the management to halt the festivities in order to safeguard peace and order on campus.
The memorandum directed all full-time students to vacate the institution immediately, stressing that the action was necessary to maintain discipline ahead of examinations.
In place of the suspended activities, the management declared an official examination break for full-time students, effective from 8 September. The break is intended to give students adequate time to prepare for the second-semester examinations, scheduled to commence on Monday, 15 September 2025, in line with the existing academic calendar.
“By the provisions of this memo, all students are to vacate the premises of the institution immediately and ensure they complete their registration, if they have not already done so,” the Registrar stated.
The directive has attracted mixed reactions among students. While some criticised the suspension as excessive, others acknowledged that the celebrations in recent years had become rowdy and disruptive.
Security operatives have reportedly been placed on alert to enforce compliance, with warnings that students found loitering on campus without clearance risk sanctions.
Observers note that FYB celebrations across many Nigerian campuses have often been associated with violence, accidents, and misconduct, leading some to welcome OSPOLY’s decision as a step towards enforcing discipline.
Parents and guardians have also been notified of the development, and urged to encourage their wards to focus on their studies as the examinations draw near.
With barely a week to go before the exams begin, the spotlight has now shifted from festivities to academics, as OSPOLY students prepare to conclude the 2024/2025 academic session under stricter management supervision.
