In a strategic move to promote discipline and strengthen academic performance among students, the Oyo State House of Assembly has officially passed a resolution banning the use of mobile phones by students during school hours across all public and private secondary schools in the state.
The motion, titled “Need to Ban the Use of Mobile Phones in Secondary Schools in the State to Improve Student Discipline and Better Academic Performance,” was deliberated and passed during the House’s sitting on April 15, 2025.
In a formal communication from the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Taiwo A. Muraina-Akinola (Reference: LD9/126/Vol.VII/167, dated April 23, 2025), the legislature urged the Executive Arm, through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, to strictly enforce the ban.
To address concerns about parental communication, the House directed school authorities to create official emergency communication channels that allow parents to reach their children without disrupting academic activities.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the decision, describing it as a necessary step towards reducing distractions, minimizing cases of cyberbullying, and fostering a more focused learning environment. One observer noted, “This is a timely and commendable move. Kudos to the Oyo State House of Assembly for taking this bold step.”
The resolution has been forwarded to the Secretary to the State Government for immediate action. The Oyo State Government is expected to issue policy guidelines to ensure seamless implementation across schools.
As the education sector continues to prioritize student wellbeing and academic excellence, this new directive positions Oyo State as a model for other states considering similar interventions.
