Rashidi Yekini, born on 23rd October 1963 in Kaduna to Yoruba parents, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers. A prolific striker, Yekini scored 37 goals in 58 appearances for the Super Eagles, leaving an indelible mark on Nigerian football.
Yekini was pivotal in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, finishing as top scorer and being named the tournament’s best player. He also made history at USA ’94 World Cup, scoring Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goal and helping the nation secure its first World Cup appearance.
His professional career began in the Nigerian league before moving to Africa Sports National in Côte d’Ivoire. He later joined Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal, where he enjoyed his most memorable years. He became the Primeira Liga top scorer in the 1993–94 season with 21 goals, following a previous campaign where he netted a career-best 34 goals in 32 games, helping the club secure promotion. His outstanding performances earned him the title of African Footballer of the Year, the first Nigerian to achieve this feat.
In 1994, Yekini joined Olympiacos FC in Greece but struggled to settle, leading to a return to Setúbal. He also had stints in La Liga with Sporting de Gijón, FC Zürich, Club Athlétique Bizertin, and Al-Shabab Riyadh, before returning to Africa Sports. In 2003, at age 39, he returned to the Nigerian league with Julius Berger FC.
Yekini’s later life was marred by personal struggles. Some reports suggested he faced mental health challenges and bouts of depression linked to financial difficulties, though the exact circumstances remain debated.
He passed away on 4th May 2012 at the age of 48, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire Nigerian footballers and fans worldwide.
