The Ministry of Education today joined the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Youth to launch the 2025 Rwanda Varsity League, marking a significant step toward strengthening holistic education across higher learning institutions.
The launch event, held at East Africa Christian College, was officiated by Minister of State Claudette Irere, together with Ngarambe Rwego from the Ministry of Sports and Brave Ngabo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth.
The Varsity League brings together students from universities and higher learning institutions nationwide, offering a platform where academic growth is complemented by structured sports participation. The competition kicked off with the first Basketball, Volleyball, and Football matches of the season.
Speaking at the event, Minister Irere underscored the educational value of sports, reminding students that athletics play an essential role in shaping disciplined, confident, and well-rounded learners.
> She noted that the league “marks the beginning of a meaningful sports journey,” and emphasized that sports and education go hand in hand—promoting healthy lifestyles, teamwork, resilience, and leadership skills that enrich students’ academic experience.
The initiative aligns with Rwanda’s broader vision of nurturing young people who are not only academically competent but also physically active, emotionally balanced, and socially responsible.
