Schneider Electric Nigeria has deployed a smart solar power system at Ikeja Central Grammar School, providing reliable and sustainable electricity to over 500 students and teachers.
The project, located in Ikeja, is part of the company’s global Access to Energy initiative aimed at expanding electricity access to underserved communities, including schools and healthcare centres.
The installation features a 3.3 kWp photovoltaic system, a 4 kW hybrid inverter, and a 10 kW battery storage unit, generating an average of 12 kWh daily.
It is monitored remotely via Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Energy Access platform, enabling real-time energy management, performance tracking and automated power switching based on the school’s schedule.
Speaking at the commissioning, Country President, Anglophone Africa at Schneider Electric, Ajibola Akindele, emphasised the role of stable electricity in enhancing learning.
“Access to energy and access to education are core priorities for us. Through smart energy solutions, we are helping schools embrace digital learning tools and create safer, more conducive classrooms,” he said.
The initiative has also received support from the Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, with its Executive Chairman, Moyosore Adebanjo, expressing readiness to expand the project to other schools across Lagos State.
For the school community, the impact has been immediate. The Head Teacher, Sanni Kudirat, said the institution had struggled with unreliable electricity for two years prior to the intervention.
“With this solar installation, classrooms are properly lit, fans are operational, internet access is reliable and administrative activities run smoothly. Students are more engaged, and their participation in lessons has improved,” she said.
Beyond improving classroom conditions, the project also introduces students to renewable energy technologies, fostering early awareness of sustainable solutions.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), reinforcing Schneider Electric’s commitment to driving inclusive development through innovative energy solutions.
