The Lagos State Building Control Agency has urged residents living close to the three-storey building that collapsed on Adu Street in the Aguda area of Lagos to temporarily relocate while safety assessments are carried out.
The agency made the appeal in a statement on Tuesday through its Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, explaining that the move was necessary to determine the structural stability of neighbouring buildings.
The building, which housed Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, reportedly collapsed around 11 a.m. on Monday while pupils were engaged in school activities.
According to reports, residents raised the alarm after noticing a crack on the building’s wall, prompting an emergency evacuation of pupils, staff, and other occupants before the structure eventually caved in.
Several students were later taken to hospitals after sustaining injuries during the evacuation process.
Ademuyiwa said no fatalities were recorded because the occupants had already exited the building before it collapsed.
“The building, which accommodated both residential occupants and a private school, collapsed on Monday, causing concern within the neighbourhood. No casualties were recorded as students, staff, and other occupants had exited the building before the incident occurred,” he said.
He added that residents occupying nearby buildings had been advised to vacate their premises temporarily as a precaution while engineers conduct structural checks on surrounding properties.
“As part of precautionary measures, occupants of nearby buildings were advised to vacate their premises temporarily while safety assessments are being conducted on surrounding structures to determine their condition and structural stability,” the statement added.
The agency also disclosed that investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
According to Ademuyiwa, preliminary observations suggest that some form of construction activity had been taking place at the property before the incident.
However, he noted that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collapse.
The Lagos State Building Control Agency urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities while technical assessments and safety procedures continue at the site.
It also reminded property owners and developers of the need to follow regulatory procedures and maintain communication with building control authorities when carrying out construction, renovation, or structural modification works.
