The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to introduce a new electric campus transportation system in selected tertiary institutions across Nigeria beginning November 2025.
The initiative aims to ease students’ mobility challenges and promote sustainability on campuses.
Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by its National Secretary, Shedrack Anzaku.
Echono said the scheme will commence with 12 pilot campuses, as part of a broader effort to enhance student welfare, learning conditions, and environmental sustainability within higher institutions.
> “From next month, we will be launching electric student shuttle services in selected institutions,” Echono said. “The vehicles will be managed by students themselves to ensure accountability and sustainability.”
He explained that each campus will have designated charging stations, with low-cost fares to ensure affordability for students.
Broader Interventions in Higher Education
According to Echono, the electric mobility project is part of TETFund’s ongoing interventions to address key infrastructural gaps, including accommodation, power supply, and digital learning systems.
> “The president challenged us to improve the conditions under which our students study — from hostels and classrooms to how they commute,” he stated. “We are investing massively in student hostels across 72 institutions and will begin commissioning more projects from December.”
He also revealed that TETFund is intensifying efforts to build multi-purpose research laboratories across universities in Kano, Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja, enabling Nigerian researchers to conduct world-class research locally without sending samples abroad.
> “We are also scaling up support for sustainable power projects and digital learning platforms to make Nigerian higher education globally competitive,” he added.
Support for Student Welfare and Access
Echono reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality education through initiatives such as the National Student Loan Scheme, now managed by NELFund.
> “We are institutionalising funding to make sure every willing Nigerian child gets the opportunity to learn and succeed,” he affirmed. “TETFund is being repositioned to better serve the interests of Nigerian students.”
NANS Commends TETFund Leadership
Speaking during the visit, NANS National Secretary, Shedrack Anzaku, commended TETFund for its “transformative impact” on Nigerian campuses, noting that the Fund’s interventions have significantly improved infrastructure and learning facilities nationwide.
“Without TETFund, many of the structures we see today in our institutions would not exist,” Anzaku said. “We commend Arc. Echono for his visionary leadership and for prioritising the welfare of Nigerian students.”
He added that the association had passed a vote of confidence on Echono, describing him as “a father and mentor” who continues to engage constructively with student leaders to promote peace and progress in the education sector.
