President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri, honouring the legacy of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The decision, which was announced during a special Federal Executive Council session, received widespread commendation from top government officials and education stakeholders. Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for what he described as a “fitting tribute to a man whose policies helped shape Nigeria’s development.”
Dr. Alausa noted that Buhari’s contributions to national security, anti-corruption, and institutional reforms left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s political and economic history. Programmes such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Scheme, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), and various social investment initiatives were highlighted as key achievements during Buhari’s administration.
“Renaming a university after him is a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s deep respect for education and national development,” Dr. Alausa stated. “It also reflects a commitment to uphold the values of integrity and service that both leaders champion.”
The renaming was part of a broader memo approved by the Council to honour President Buhari’s legacy and reinforce national memory around impactful leadership. Dignitaries at the session included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, state governors, ministers, and other key figures who all offered glowing tributes.
According to the Ministry, the renamed Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri will serve not only as a centre of academic excellence but also as a symbol of principled leadership and national renewal.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, reiterated the importance of education in driving Nigeria’s human capital development, describing the move as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional legacies and inspire future generations.
The Federal Ministry of Education pledged continued commitment to education reforms and nation-building through values rooted in integrity, innovation, and excellence.
