The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association has praised the Federal Government for taking decisive steps to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of the association’s 55th anniversary and award night, President of the association, Ifeoluwa Oyedele, highlighted recent initiatives that he said were improving access and quality in education.
He particularly commended the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), noting that it had enabled students to continue their studies without disruption. Oyedele also lauded the government’s decision to approve full scholarships for students in technical education at all levels.
“The federal government has shown real commitment to making education accessible. This is commendable,” he said.
Oyedele further acknowledged government efforts to resolve lingering disputes with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) but urged a lasting solution to avoid nationwide strikes.
“The salaries of our lecturers are nothing to write home about. That is why we suffer excessive brain drain. A professor cannot even afford to send his own child to the university where he teaches. This has to change,” he stressed.
He called for a new funding model for education, warning that the system is under strain from primary to tertiary levels. According to him, inadequate funding and poor welfare for teachers and researchers continue to weaken the sector.
“As an association, we have chosen to be part of the solution,” he added, noting that the alumni had invested in renovating lecture halls and hostels, mentoring students, and keeping education issues in the national conversation.
Oyedele urged alumni across the country to give back to their alma mater through mentorship, advocacy, or financial support.
“Every contribution matters. With the right support, Nigerian universities will not only compete globally but also drive national development in science, technology, the arts, and governance,” he said.
On the association’s 55th anniversary, Oyedele described the celebration as a flagship event where members worldwide would gather to celebrate excellence, honor outstanding contributions, and raise funds for further support.
The event will take place on October 17 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, with Vice President Senator Ibrahim Shettima as Special Guest of Honour.
Among the awardees are Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and Wole Olanipekun, Pro-Chancellor of UNILAG.
