The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has flagged off the 2025/2026 Teaching Practice Exercise with the deployment of 2,270 student-teachers to primary and secondary schools across Lagos State, a move aimed at strengthening the state’s education workforce and nurturing future-ready professionals.
The official unveiling took place on Wednesday, September 10, during an orientation programme organized by the Faculty of Education.
Preparing Student-Teachers for the Classroom
In his address, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Simeon Oladipo, urged the new cohort to embrace diversity in classrooms, foster inclusion, and shun all forms of discrimination. He emphasized adaptability, continuous learning, and advocacy for supportive interventions as critical attributes for thriving in today’s dynamic education landscape.
Chairperson of the Faculty’s Teaching Practice Committee, Professor Adeola Afonja, described the orientation as a vital stage in grooming future educators. She advised the student-teachers to approach their assignments with patience, open-mindedness, and humility, while viewing challenges as part of their professional growth.
Insights from Education Experts
The event featured key lectures designed to equip the student-teachers with practical insights.
Dr. Jacob Adeyanju of the Department of Educational Management delivered a lecture titled “The Teaching Profession in the 21st Century: Between Theoretical Studies and Practical Realities.” He underscored the importance of aligning classroom practice with existing child rights legislation and national education policies.
Professor Oyenike Adeosun spoke on “The Power of Interaction in Teaching Practice,” cautioning participants against malpractice and urging them to uphold integrity in their professional duties.
Heads of Departments within the Faculty also delivered goodwill messages, congratulating the students on reaching this academic milestone and reminding them to serve as ambassadors of UNILAG’s “Future-Ready” agenda. They highlighted the importance of professionalism, decent dressing, and positive conduct in their assigned schools.
Addressing Concerns, Setting the Stage
During the interactive session, students raised questions about their responsibilities and conduct during the exercise. Faculty leaders and resource persons provided clarifications to ensure the participants are well-prepared for the field experience.
According to the Teaching Practice Coordinator, Dr. Stella Anyama, the 12-week programme will commence on Monday, September 22, 2025, across selected primary and secondary schools in Lagos State.
By deploying this large cohort, UNILAG is reinforcing its role in preparing skilled, ethical, and adaptable teachers to meet the growing educational needs of Nigeria’s economic capital.
