The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has strengthened its innovation ecosystem with the donation of a state-of-the-art Virtual Computing Laboratory and an Electronics Laboratory to the UNILAG Design Studio. The donation, facilitated by STEMpower Inc. in collaboration with DHL and SmartAID, includes not only modern equipment but also hands-on training to ensure effective utilisation.
The installation and training were led by Anteneh Fisseha, Operations Manager at STEMpower Inc., and Merkineh Petros, the organisation’s ICT Manager. Both experts travelled from Ethiopia to oversee the process, driven by STEMpower’s core belief that “every child is a scientist in the making,” and that innovation flourishes when institutions are equipped with the right tools. Their choice of UNILAG reflects the University’s reputation as one of West Africa’s leading centres of innovation.
Speaking during the handover, Professor Theophilus Akinfenwa Fashanu, Principal Investigator at the UNILAG Design Studio, noted that despite the progress made in STEM education across West Africa, significant opportunities remain untapped. He emphasized that collaborations like this will help unlock those opportunities and keep UNILAG at the forefront of knowledge creation.
Professor Olusoji M. Ilori, Director of the Academic Planning Unit, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, expressed appreciation for the initiative. He highlighted the importance of early exposure to digital tools and hands-on learning in shaping the next generation of innovators.
Through the Design Studio and other tech and innovation hubs on campus, UNILAG has continued to advance inclusive learning by opening its doors to students from all fields and even learners outside the University. This new partnership further expands access to tools that enable students to design, build and solve real-world problems.
The Virtual Computing and Electronics Laboratories represent more than equipment—they are strategic investments in young thinkers, makers and problem-solvers whose skills will contribute to global technological advancement. As it continues to grow, the UNILAG Design Studio remains committed to welcoming more learners and fostering a vibrant community of creators.
