The University of Rwanda, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has opened applications for the 2027 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, offering fully funded master’s scholarships to eligible African students.
The scholarship is designed to increase access to higher education for academically qualified but economically disadvantaged young Africans, including those from conflict and post-conflict affected communities.
The programme, currently admitting its third cohort, is part of a 10-year initiative aimed at nurturing Africa’s next generation of ethical and transformative leaders who will contribute to the development of their communities and the continent.
According to the organisers, successful applicants will receive comprehensive financial support, including full tuition fees, accommodation, a monthly living stipend, a laptop, learning materials, and an annual return travel allowance.
Scholars will also benefit from psycho-social support services, academic mentoring, career development programmes, internships with industry partners, leadership training, community service opportunities, and access to the global Mastercard Foundation Scholars alumni network.
### Eligibility
Applicants must:
* Have applied for admission into a two-year master’s programme at the University of Rwanda for the September 2026 intake.
* Hold a bachelor’s degree in a field related to their intended master’s programme.
* Be citizens of Rwanda or any African country. Refugee applicants must provide certification from UNHCR, MINEMA or another recognised authority.
* Be aged 40 years or below for male applicants and 45 years or below for female applicants at the time of application.
* Demonstrate financial hardship, disability, or other significant social or economic challenges.
* Show evidence of leadership potential and active community engagement.
* Demonstrate commitment to giving back to their communities after completing the programme.
* Not be enrolled in another tertiary institution.
The scholarship programme noted that 70 per cent of awards will be allocated to female applicants, while 80 per cent will go to students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes.

* Completed application form
* Digital passport photograph (white background)
* National identity card showing date of birth
* Scanned national ID
* International passport (for non-Rwandan applicants)
* Refugee identification or supporting documents (where applicable)
* Disability certificate (where applicable)
* Leadership certificates and supporting documents
### Application process
Interested candidates are required to create an account on the University of Rwanda Mastercard Foundation Scholars application portal, complete the online application form, upload the required documents, and submit their applications before the deadline.
Applications close on **August 22, 2026**.
