Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has announced the suspension of its 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government (SUG) election in a bid to resolve disputes surrounding the process.
The decision was communicated on 14 July through an official statement signed by Njelita Louis, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations Officer, and posted on the university’s Facebook page.
According to the statement, the move followed deliberations at the institution’s 357th management meeting and was intended to allow for a fair resolution of all grievances raised during the electoral process.
*”The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, at its 357th meeting held recently, has directed the suspension of the 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government election,” the statement read.
“This decision has been taken to enable the management to address all grievances surrounding the electoral process and ensure that all concerned parties are given a fair hearing.
“The University Management urges all authorities to adhere strictly to this directive and cooperate with the University Administration as efforts are made to resolve the issues at hand.”
Meanwhile, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, is scheduled to meet with students on 17 July to discuss issues concerning students’ well-being and substance abuse on campus.
According to a flyer shared on the university’s Facebook page, attendees at the congress will include the SUG executives, legislature, and judiciary, as well as executives of faculty and departmental associations, hostel presidents, nominees of the SUG president, and other interested students.
The management has urged all stakeholders to cooperate as the university works towards addressing students’ concerns and restoring confidence in the electoral process.
