Victor Osimhen scored twice as Nigeria’s Super Eagles defeated Gabon 4-1 in extra time to advance to the next stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Thursday at Stade Mohammed V.
After a goalless first half, Akor Adams opened the scoring early in the second half, capitalising on a defensive error. Gabon quickly responded, equalising four minutes before the end of regulation, sending the match into extra time.
In extra time, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead with a composed finish, before Osimhen added two more goals to seal the emphatic victory. The Nigerian defence, marshalled by Benjamin Frederick and Calvin Bassey, successfully contained Gabon’s late attempts to score.
This win moves Nigeria closer to a World Cup berth, following a 4-0 triumph over Benin Republic, which included a hat-trick from Osimhen. Gabon, finishing second in Group F behind Ivory Coast, also advanced to the playoff stage.
The Super Eagles will face either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoff for a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
