The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing youth unemployment through expanded investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), following commendation from the World Bank for Nigeria’s ongoing skills development reforms.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, made this known during a high-level inspection visit by the World Bank’s Education Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, Scherezad Latif, to Wavecrest College of Hospitality. The institution is one of the accredited centres under the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project.
Dr. Alausa explained that the IDEAS Project supports the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which places strong emphasis on human capital development, youth empowerment, and inclusive economic growth. According to him, more than 3,000 IDEAS TVET centres are currently operational across the country, delivering competency-based training tailored to meet labour market needs.
He further noted that beneficiaries are selected through a transparent process and undergo six months of industry-focused training. Graduates also receive starter packs to support their transition into employment or entrepreneurship. In addition, the Ministry is collaborating with the Bank of Industry to provide graduates with access to soft loans to help scale their businesses.
The Federal Ministry of Education reiterated its determination to sustain strategic investments in skills acquisition programmes as a pathway to job creation, entrepreneurship, and long-term national development.
