A brilliant Nigerian scholar, Rex Obiwuru, has achieved an outstanding academic milestone after completing his Master’s degree at the University of St Andrews, United Kingdom, with an impressive 80% (Merit).
Rex studied under the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, a fully funded program that covered his tuition, airfare, monthly stipend of £1,781, and other allowances.
His academic journey began in 2015 at ESEP-LE BERGER University, Republic of Benin, where he graduated with First-Class Honours in International Affairs. He later earned a Distinction in History and International Relations from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2023.
In 2025, Rex completed a second Master’s degree at St Andrews, despite challenges including harsh weather, academic transition into Terrorism Studies, and self-doubt.
During the program, he: • Worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence
* Earned a Dissertation Distinction (85%), ranked among the department’s best
* Researched how religious leaders help prevent violent radicalization in Northern Nigeria
* Published a book chapter, with another paper conditionally accepted by a Q1 journal
Reflecting on his journey, Rex said:
“Anything is possible. You can lose many things, but not your hope.”
An inspiring reminder that determination and belief can take you anywhere.
