YouTube vs Netflix: Why the Platforms Are Fighting for Top Creators

YouTube is reportedly offering some creators millions of dollars to keep their videos exclusively on the platform, as Netflix expands its efforts to bring popular creator-led content to its streaming service.

The reported move signals growing competition between the two platforms for creators who have built large audiences outside traditional television and film.

Here’s what to know:

1. YouTube is reportedly offering millions for exclusivity

According to reports, YouTube has begun holding exclusivity discussions with a small number of creators.

One creator was reportedly offered a verbal deal worth millions of dollars in exchange for posting exclusively on YouTube for an agreed period.

The details of the reported deals vary from creator to creator, and discussions have not necessarily resulted in final agreements.

2. Netflix is moving deeper into creator content

Netflix has increasingly pursued content from popular online creators, including deals involving personalities such as Ms. Rachel and Salish Matter.

While some creator videos have appeared on both platforms, Netflix has also sought arrangements that give it greater control over certain content.

This puts pressure on YouTube to ensure that its biggest creators remain on the platform.

3. Why creators matter to Netflix

Creators already have something traditional entertainment companies spend heavily to build: large, loyal audiences.

Instead of starting from scratch to attract viewers, streaming platforms can work with established creators whose audiences already follow their content.

For Netflix, bringing creator-led programmes to its platform could help it reach audiences that increasingly consume entertainment through YouTube and other digital platforms.

4. Netflix is also competing with YouTube in podcasts

The competition is not limited to regular creator videos.

Netflix has expanded into video podcasts, signing deals involving programmes such as The Bill Simmons Podcast and The Breakfast Club.

Some of these arrangements have reportedly required shows to remove their video podcasts from YouTube, directly challenging YouTube’s long-standing dominance in the format.

5. YouTube has traditionally relied on advertising revenue-sharing

YouTube has historically supported creators largely through its advertising revenue-sharing system, rather than routinely paying top creators large sums simply to remain on the platform.

The reported exclusivity offers would therefore represent a more direct financial strategy for retaining major creator talent.

6. Creators could have more bargaining power

The growing competition could give major creators greater negotiating power.
With YouTube and Netflix competing for access to their audiences, top creators may have more opportunities to negotiate higher payments, marketing support, brand opportunities and other benefits.

However, exclusivity could also require creators to give up the ability to distribute their content across multiple platforms during the agreed period.

7. The bigger battle is over where audiences watch

At the heart of the competition is audience attention.

YouTube has become a major destination for creator-driven entertainment, while Netflix remains one of the world’s biggest streaming platforms.

As the line between traditional entertainment and online creator content continues to disappear, both companies appear increasingly interested in controlling not just the platform where people watch, but also the creators who bring those audiences with them.
