As we mark our 65th Independence Anniversary, it is important to remember and celebrate the heroes who stood their ground, challenged colonial rule, and paved the way for a free Nigeria. While some names are familiar, others are less mentioned but equally significant in the struggle for independence. Their courage, resilience, and vision laid the foundation for the Nigeria we know today.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet the pioneers of Nigeria’s Independence
1. Herbert Macaulay – Regarded as the Father of Nigerian Nationalism, he laid the foundation for political movements by founding the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) in 1923.
2. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (“Zik of Africa”) – A nationalist, journalist, and political leader who inspired mass movements and became Nigeria’s first President.
3. Chief Obafemi Awolowo – Founder of the Action Group, he championed education, self-government, and development in Western Nigeria.
4. Sir Ahmadu Bello (Sardauna of Sokoto) – Premier of Northern Nigeria and a major voice for unity and progress in the independence movement.
5. Chief Anthony Enahoro – At just 29 years old, he moved the historic motion for Nigeria’s independence in 1953.
6. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa – A nationalist leader who became Nigeria’s first Prime Minister.
7. Ernest Ikoli – Journalist, politician, and co-founder of the Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM).
8. Chief H.O. Davies – Lawyer and nationalist, also a strong member of the NYM.
9. Dr. Michael Okpara – Premier of Eastern Nigeria who championed economic growth and stood firm in nationalist struggles.
10. Margaret Ekpo – A fearless female nationalist and activist who gave women a strong voice in the independence struggle.
Finally, these heroes, both men and women, played vital roles in ensuring Nigeria’s freedom. Their sacrifices remain a reminder that independence was hard-won, and it is our duty as citizens to protect and nurture the nation they fought to build.
