Jacinta Mutwiwa is a Kenyan mathematician and university lecturer who has distinguished herself as one of the youngest women in the country to earn a PhD in Applied Mathematics before the age of 30. Her academic excellence dates back to childhood, having scored 299 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
Born and raised in Makueni County, Mutwiwa began her education at Uvunye Primary School. She later joined Kiu Secondary School, a day school in the same county, where she sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and obtained a B (plain).
Her performance earned her a historic milestone as the first female student from Kiu Secondary School to gain university admission through the Joint Admissions Board (JAB).
In 2012, Mutwiwa enrolled at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), where she studied Education in Mathematics and Business Studies. She graduated in 2015 with a First-Class Honours degree, a feat that attracted the support of her lecturers, who sponsored her for postgraduate studies.
She proceeded to Kibabii University in 2016 to pursue a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics, graduating in 2019. In 2020, she advanced to doctoral studies at the same institution after winning a fully funded fellowship from the Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis for Africa (CEMA).
CEMA, a multidisciplinary centre hosted at the University of Nairobi, focuses on supporting the control and eradication of infectious diseases through data-driven research across Kenya and Africa.
Mutwiwa completed her PhD before turning 30, solidifying her place among Kenya’s youngest PhD holders in mathematics.
Currently, she serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at Kibabii University and is the Coordinator of Linkages and International Affairs. She is also actively involved in educational leadership, serving as Board Chairperson of Uvunye Secondary School and as a board member of St. Andriana Kiongwani Boys High School and St. Peter’s Mumias Boys High School.
Her teaching career includes serving as a part-time diploma instructor at Kibabii University between 2017 and 2019, and later as a Graduate Assistant from September 2019 to June 2020, where she taught and examined undergraduate mathematics students.
In October 2025, Mutwiwa received national and regional recognition after being named the Best Overall Presenter at the 3rd Busitema University Science, Technology and Innovation Symposium (BUSTIC 2025), held in Mbale City, Uganda. Her award-winning presentation was titled “A Mathematical Model for the Dynamics of Stress and Depression among Kenyan University Students.”
Mutwiwa’s journey reflects resilience, discipline, and the transformative power of education, positioning her as an inspiration to young scholars across Kenya and Africa.
