Beyond politics and titles, leadership is often measured by impact — and that was the message at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, as Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, received an honorary Doctor of Humanities (Honoris Causa).
The award was presented during the university’s combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies, following approval by the institution’s Senate and Governing Council.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, described the honour as a recognition of a public career shaped by service, inclusion, and tangible impact.
“This honour is reserved for leaders whose influence transcends office and geography,” Umar said, noting that Governor Otu’s leadership reflects responsibility, integrity, and concern for people.
According to the university, the award acknowledges Otu’s contributions to governance, public service, social development, and humanitarian causes, values it says align closely with MAU’s institutional philosophy.
Prof. Umar added that the governor’s approach to leadership shows that governance is not just about authority, but about accountability to humanity.
Accepting the honour, Governor Otu described the doctorate as a reminder that service to humanity remains the highest credential any leader can earn.
“I receive this doctorate not as a personal trophy, but as a tribute to collective effort and shared belief that governance must uplift the human spirit,” he said.
The governor noted that such recognition comes with renewed responsibility, adding that honorary degrees should serve as motivation to deepen commitments to justice, equity, and compassion in public life.
Reflecting on education, Otu said universities play a critical role in shaping the nation’s future, especially for young people.
“Institutions like MAU are not just centres of learning; they are spaces where the future of the nation is forged,” he said, dedicating the honour to young Nigerians whose hopes depend on purposeful leadership.
He also praised the university for choosing to celebrate values over status, saying the recognition reinforces the importance of integrity and service in leadership.
As convocation season continues across Nigerian campuses, the moment at MAU stands as a reminder that academic honours often speak beyond certificates — they reflect the kind of leadership students are encouraged to aspire to.
