Global Teacher Prize Ambassador, Débora Garofalo of Brazil, has been honoured as the first-ever Global Teacher Influencer of the Year, a newly introduced award by the Varkey Foundation aimed at recognising teachers who leverage social media to expand learning beyond the classroom.
Garofalo, a public school teacher based in São Paulo, received the prestigious recognition from Jay Varkey, Trustee of the Varkey Foundation and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GEMS Education. The award presentation took place during a gala dinner at Atlantis, The Palm, in Dubai, which celebrated outstanding teachers from across the globe.
The Brazilian educator earned the recognition through her innovative ‘junk robotics’ programme, an initiative that transforms discarded materials into practical learning tools. The programme has not only enhanced students’ creativity and problem-solving skills but has also inspired educators, communities and learners across Brazil and internationally.
The Varkey Foundation noted that the newly launched award highlights educators who effectively use digital platforms to broaden educational impact, promote engagement, and drive innovation in teaching and learning.
Garofalo’s work continues to demonstrate how sustainable practices and creative teaching methods can foster meaningful educational experiences and encourage environmental consciousness among young learners.
