The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has debunked reports that a former student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Ademiju Ayeni, popularly known as “Jago”, was stabbed to death during the association’s recently concluded convention in Osogbo, Osun State.
NANS described the reports as false and misleading, saying Ayeni did not die during the convention as widely claimed on social media.
The clarification followed reports circulating online that the former student was allegedly stabbed during the convention, with the incident generating concerns among students and members of the public.
According to NANS, the circumstances surrounding Ayeni’s death were unrelated to the convention and should not be attributed to the event without verified evidence.
The students’ body urged members of the public, particularly students, to disregard unverified reports and rely on official statements when dealing with sensitive incidents involving students and student organisations.
NANS also appealed to media organisations and social media users to exercise caution when publishing information concerning deaths or violent incidents, noting that inaccurate reports could cause unnecessary panic and distress for families and communities.
The association reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of Nigerian students, while urging students and the public to avoid spreading information that has not been independently verified.
