Nigeria’s Super Eagles have welcomed three new players into the squad for this month’s 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Head coach Eric Chelle named a 24-man squad for the Group L campaign, with Nigeria hosting Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
Here is what to know about the three new invitees.
George Ilenikhena — Al Ittihad
The Lagos-born forward began his career with French club Amiens before moving to Royal Antwerp, where he continued his development.
His performances earned him a move to Monaco, where he gained attention for his displays, particularly in the UEFA Champions League.
Ilenikhena joined Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad earlier this year. After initially struggling with fitness and playing time, the 20-year-old has started the new season strongly.
He has scored six goals and provided two assists in nine appearances across all competitions.
Ilenikhena previously represented France at youth level but has committed his international future to Nigeria.
His call-up also comes at a time when Nigeria is dealing with injury concerns involving forwards Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu.
Isaac James — Alverca
Isaac James is a Portugal-based left-back receiving his first Super Eagles invitation.
The 22-year-old has impressed in the position for Alverca and is being brought into the squad partly because of the injury to Zaidu Sanusi, which has reduced Nigeria’s options at left-back.
James will now have an opportunity to compete for a place in Chelle’s team and potentially make his international debut.
He has also been included in the squad for Nigeria’s friendly against Russia on October 6.
Moses Usor — LASK
Moses Usor is the third player receiving his first Super Eagles call-up.
The 24-year-old forward plays for Austrian club LASK and enjoyed a successful 2025/26 season.
Usor helped the club win the Austrian league and cup double, while LASK also secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history.
His performances have now earned him an opportunity to represent Nigeria at senior international level.
What the Newcomers Bring
The three players give Chelle additional options as Nigeria continues its AFCON qualifying campaign.
Ilenikhena provides another attacking option, James adds depth at left-back, while Usor gives the coach another forward to consider.
The September qualifiers could also give the newcomers their first opportunity to make an impression in the Super Eagles shirt as Nigeria faces Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
