Love can be beautiful, but before getting into a relationship, there are certain things every student should understand.
1. Love Will Not Cure Your Loneliness
Having a boyfriend or girlfriend will not automatically solve your loneliness or other underlying issues. Learn to understand yourself and work towards your happiness.
2. A Relationship Is Not Proof of Growth
Reaching 200 or 300 level does not mean you must have a boyfriend or girlfriend. You can grow academically, emotionally and socially without being in a romantic relationship.
3. Love Goes Beyond Romance
You can love your friends and family deeply without wanting a romantic relationship with them. Do not let being single make you hostile towards others.
4. Look Beyond Physical Attraction
Someone’s beauty or handsomeness is not enough. Consider their character, values, respect for you and the positive impact they can have on your life.
5. Do Not Make Love Your Only Source of Happiness
Your happiness should not depend entirely on someone’s attention or presence. Build friendships, pursue your interests and focus on your personal growth.
6. Do Not Rush Into a Relationship
You do not need a boyfriend or girlfriend because your friends have one. Take your time to understand your feelings and ensure you are ready for the responsibilities of a relationship.
7. Understand the Consequences
Love comes with responsibilities. Your decisions can affect your emotions, education and future. Understand the possible consequences, including unintended pregnancy, before making important choices.
Love is beautiful, but before committing to someone, take a moment to ask yourself: Do I understand myself? Do I understand my journey? And do I truly have what it takes to build a healthy, sustainable relationship?
