Many student entrepreneurs become frustrated when their businesses record losses. They sell what they believe are good products, yet struggle to make sales.

However, having a good product is one thing; having a product people actually need is another.

Before concluding that a business is failing, student entrepreneurs should first ask themselves: Am I selling something students need and are willing to pay for?

The campus is not just a place for lectures and examinations. It is also a marketplace. When thousands of students move in and out of a school, there is purchasing power that entrepreneurs can tap into.

The challenge is recognising that opportunity and knowing how to reach potential customers without spending a fortune on advertising.

Who Can Nigerian Students Turn to Over Wrong Results? Who Can Nigerian Students Turn to Over Wrong Results? Who Can Nigerian Students Turn to Over Wrong Results?

Here are five strategies to consider.

1. Use Word-of-Mouth Marketing

Tell your friends, coursemates, roommates and other people about your business. Encourage satisfied customers to recommend your products or services to others.

One customer can introduce you to another, who can introduce you to someone else. Over time, these recommendations can help you reach more people without paying for advertisements.

2. Create Attractive Offers

Sometimes, customers need a reason to choose your product over another option. Consider offers such as discounts on selected items, bundle deals or special prices for repeat customers.

The goal is to attract buyers while ensuring that your selling price still covers your costs and leaves you with a reasonable profit.

3. Sell in Bulk

Instead of selling only individual units, consider offering products in bulk at a suitable price.

For example, if you sell snacks, stationery or personal-care products, you could offer a discounted price to customers who buy several items at once.

Bulk sales can increase the quantity sold per transaction, although you should calculate your costs carefully before offering discounts.

4. Market Your Business Consistently

Do not wait until sales become slow before talking about your business.

Whenever you meet new people, attend student gatherings or interact with coursemates and students from other departments, look for natural opportunities to introduce what you sell.

You can also use your social media status and student groups where business promotion is permitted. Consistent marketing helps people remember your business when they need your products.

5. Try Personal Mass Advertising

Your everyday appearance can also become a marketing opportunity. Consider wearing a branded T-shirt that displays your business name, what you sell and a contact detail.

Imagine walking around campus in a shirt advertising your business. Someone who needs your product might notice it, approach you and ask how to make a purchase.

Unlike paid advertising campaigns, a branded shirt can promote your business repeatedly wherever you wear it. Its cost-effectiveness depends on the production cost, how often you wear it and how many potential customers see it.

Sales are influenced by several factors, including product demand, pricing, quality, visibility and customer experience. Your mindset matters, too, because it shapes how you identify opportunities and approach potential customers.

Stop seeing your school only as a campus. Start recognising the marketplace within it.

Thousands of students represent potential customers, but reaching them requires more than simply having a good product. You must understand what they need, communicate your offer clearly and give them a reason to buy from you.
