The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital intelligence tools to combat fake news, online scams and misleading information capable of damaging its reputation.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the service’s spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada.
Adeniyi spoke at the 2026 Nigerian Council of the Institute of Public Relations Roundtable, themed “Algorithm Influence and Public Relations”, where he highlighted the growing importance of AI in public communication and the service’s operations.
He explained that the initiative would enable the NCS to monitor online information, verify claims and respond to misleading narratives, while working with relevant agencies to identify and apprehend individuals responsible for spreading false or fraudulent content.
The Customs chief also stressed the need for effective communication to help Nigerians understand the reasons behind the actions and operations of customs officers, noting that AI had become increasingly important in both operational activities and strategic communication.
According to him, the service has deployed AI in its core operational duties over the years, particularly in risk management, where technology helps assess imported goods, classify them according to risk levels and determine appropriate interventions.
Beyond its operational applications, AI can also analyse public sentiment and provide insights into how Nigerians perceive the activities of the Customs Service, helping the agency understand public concerns and improve its communication strategies.
The NCS is also leveraging digital platforms to verify information and strengthen collaboration with other government agencies in tackling the spread of misleading claims and online fraud.
The roundtable examined the growing influence of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on public communication, particularly the implications of algorithm-driven information and its impact on public relations.
