EduTimes Africa gathered that the search is on for the world’s most inspiring teacher, as nominations officially open for the 2025 GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize, a prestigious initiative of the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO.
In a post shared by the verified Facebook account of Varkey Foundation and the Global Teacher Prize, the nominations are confirmed open.
With a US$1 million reward, the Global Teacher Prize has, for a decade, celebrated educators who go beyond the call of duty — from tackling local educational challenges to transforming lives and communities through innovative teaching.
EduTimes Africa gathered that the Organisers are calling on students, parents, colleagues, and education leaders worldwide to nominate a visionary teacher who is making a significant impact, both in and outside the classroom.
Since its inception, the prize has spotlighted teachers working in conflict zones, rural communities, and underserved urban areas — educators who use creativity, compassion, and resilience to reimagine learning and champion equality in education.
The 2025 edition is expected to draw thousands of nominations globally, celebrating educators who are not only shaping minds but also influencing policy, pioneering inclusion, and using technology to bridge learning gaps.
How to Nominate
Nominations and applications are now live via the Varkey Foundation’s Awards Platform, and the process is open to teachers from every corner of the world — regardless of subject, level, or country.
Global Recognition for Local Heroes
“Teachers matter. Behind every successful individual is a teacher who believed in them,” said the Varkey Foundation in a statement. “This award is a tribute to those who are shaping our future, often in the most challenging environments.”
With global education at a turning point post-pandemic, the role of teachers in driving recovery, equity, and innovation has never been more important.
So whether you know a teacher innovating with local resources, inspiring through social impact, or changing the education narrative, now is the time to give them the recognition they deserve.
