Introduction
The urgency of the climate crisis is compounded by an alarming rise in misinformation and disinformation that threaten public understanding and hinder climate action. To counter this growing challenge, the Global Initiative on Information Integrity on Climate Change—launched by UNESCO, the Government of Brazil, and the UN Department of Global Communications—is now inviting applications for its first round of funding. The initiative is calling on not-for-profit organizations to submit proposals aimed at strengthening information integrity on climate change, with particular emphasis on evidence-based journalism, strategic communication, and research from the Global South.
About the Initiative
Trust in scientific knowledge is the backbone of effective climate action by governments, private sectors, international organizations, and citizens. Yet, the digital ecosystem is increasingly being flooded with coordinated misinformation, conspiracy theories, and misleading narratives that disrupt meaningful climate dialogue and policy development.
This new global initiative aims to fill a critical gap by fostering a structural understanding of how to build and protect information integrity in climate communication—locally and globally.
Focus Areas for Funding
Applicants are encouraged to propose projects in the following focus areas:
Research: Gathering and producing evidence on how climate change is impacted by disinformation and misinformation.
Strategic Communication: Developing and deploying evidence-based communication strategies to counter falsehoods.
Investigative Journalism: Supporting journalism initiatives that expose misleading narratives and promote public understanding of the climate emergency.
Funding Details
Grant Range: USD $30,000 – $150,000 per project
Eligible Applicants: NGOs, research institutes, universities, and not-for-profit journalism organizations registered for at least two years

Additional Opportunities
Selected organizations will not only receive funding but also join a first-of-its-kind global and interdisciplinary network to promote climate information integrity and generate actionable policy recommendations.
Encouraged Applicants
The Initiative strongly encourages submissions from:
Organizations based in low- and lower-middle-income countries
Entities working in diverse local languages
Members of regional or global networks
Conclusion, The Global Initiative recognizes the threat to information integrity as a major global risk and invites all stakeholders to amplify this opportunity. Climate misinformation delays action, erodes trust in science, and obstructs progress. This is a call to action—to research, report, and communicate with integrity, and to build a future where decisions on climate are grounded in facts, not fiction.
