The Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) offers prestigious annual writing scholarships to support African writers working on fiction or creative non-fiction books. The scholarships are intended to give writers the financial freedom to complete the first draft of a full-length book, providing both funding and accountability throughout the writing year.
Grant Value
£18,000 total paid monthly over 12 months
For non-fiction writers, the grant may extend up to 18 months, at the Foundation’s discretion
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Have been born in Africa, or have both parents born in Africa
Write in English
Submit a published work (2,000–5,000 words) that has been offered for sale
Be committed to writing a new full-length book (fiction or creative non-fiction)
Note: Academic, political, religious, or scientific works are not eligible.
Scholarship Requirements
Scholars must submit at least 10,000 new words every month via email
Payments will continue for the duration of the scholarship as long as monthly submissions are made
If the draft is finished early, payments continue during the editing phase
Required Documents
Applicants must submit:
1. A 2,000–5,000 word excerpt from a published work (Word doc)
2. Proof of publication and proof of sale of the submitted piece
3. A 400–1,000 word description of the book they intend to write
4. A scan of an official document showing that they or both parents were born in Africa
5. A brief bio (200–300 words)
6. A note on how they heard about the scholarship
