Breaking: ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike Over ‘Amputated’ Salarie
Lecturers at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), under the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have announced the commencement of an indefinite strike over what they describe as “amputated” salaries paid for January and February 2026.
The decision followed an emergency congress of the union held on Tuesday, where members deliberated on the salary cuts implemented by the university management over the past two months.
In a communiqué signed by the branch chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and secretary, Adesina Arikawe, the union said the strike would begin on Wednesday, March 11, and would continue until the outstanding salary issues are resolved.
According to the union, members received incomplete salaries in January. Lecturers on the Akoka campus were reportedly not paid Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), while those at the Idi-Araba campus were denied both EAA and the Conference Attendance and Training Allowance (CATA).
ASUU further alleged that the February salaries paid to its members were also reduced, describing the development as unacceptable.
The union condemned the action of the university administration, saying the salary cuts violate established standards and demonstrate insensitivity toward academic staff.
Consequently, ASUU directed its members to withdraw their services until the university management pays the outstanding portions of the January and February salaries in full.
The union maintained that the strike would remain in force until the affected payments are completely settled.
