Lagos State University has a new Chancellor — and it’s a familiar royal name in Lagos.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who serves as the Visitor to the university, has appointed the Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, as the sixth Chancellor of LASU.
The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Emmanuel Fanu.
Oba Ogunsanwo succeeds Prof Gbolahan Elias (SAN), who previously served as the fifth Chancellor of the university.
According to the statement, the appointment was made in line with the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended), which empowers the Visitor to appoint the Chancellor.
His tenure will run for a single term of five years, effective from February 13, 2026, and is renewable once.
Although the Chancellor’s role is largely ceremonial, it holds symbolic weight in the life of the university.
The Chancellor presides over convocation ceremonies, represents the institution at major events and serves as a bridge between the university and the broader society.
For students, that presence can strengthen institutional prestige, partnerships and visibility beyond campus walls.
LASU management and council congratulated Oba Ogunsanwo on his appointment, expressing optimism that his leadership would advance the university’s vision and mission.
They also appreciated Prof Gbolahan Elias for his meritorious service during his tenure.
As LASU welcomes a new ceremonial head, attention now turns to how this royal appointment may shape the university’s public image and influence in the coming years.
