The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, has resigned following revelations by PREMIUM TIMES that he forged two academic certificates.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the resignation on Tuesday in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following some allegations against him,” Mr Onanuga wrote.
Mr Onanuga said President Tinubu appointed Nnaji in August 2023 and that the minister tendered his resignation in a letter thanking the president for the opportunity to serve.
In his resignation letter, Nnaji claimed he had been the target of “blackmail by political opponents.”
“President Tinubu thanked him for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours,” Mr Onanuga added.
EduTimes Africa had earlier reported that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) disowned Nnaji’s academic certificates, confirming they did not issue the documents he claimed to possess.
The minister’s exit comes amid mounting public pressure and scrutiny over the forgery allegations, which have stirred widespread reactions across the country.
