Scholars from the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Covenant University, made a significant mark at the recent Summer Institute program hosted by the Industrial University of Tyumen (IUT), in Russia. They were among the 25 participants from various countries, including China, Philippine, Vietnam, South Africa, Serbia, and Mongolia, invited to the event; a testament to the University’s commitment to global academic collaboration.
Expressing his excitement at the performance of the faculty members, the Director, International Office and Linkages at Covenant University, Dr. Isaac Akinwunmi, stated, “I am delighted that our faculty successfully participated in this program, which provided invaluable insights into Russian oil and gas technology while fostering international collaboration.”
He further stated that, their involvement aligns with a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Covenant University and IUT, aimed at enhancing collaboration through joint educational programs, student and staff exchanges, joint research initiatives, and academic conferences.
“Earlier this year, Covenant University demonstrated its innovative spirit at IUT’s, ‘Battle of University Start-ups’ competition, where Team Cognito Africa earned accolades for ‘Best Creative’ and ‘Most Daring’ with a project focused on sustainable energy from plastics, competing against eleven teams from five countries,” he added
Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Gift Aghaulor described the Summer Institute as a transformative opportunity. “The program featured experts from industry and faculty from both the University of Tyumen and Ural Federal University. Topics included the history of the Russian oil and gas industry, teamwork and leadership, and physical enhanced oil recovery methods, which deepened my understanding of industry practices,” she explained.
Aghaulor highlighted the significance of engaging with international peers, noting that the cultural immersion broadened her global perspective. “This experience has not only expanded my technical expertise but also strengthened my adaptability and cultural awareness,” she added.
Ms. Aghaulor also emphasized a significant benefit for Covenant University: the acquisition of a free academic license for the RN-GRID hydraulic fracturing software, which will greatly enhance student training.
Ms. Damilola Olaniyan, reflected on the exposure gained from the program, stating, “The educational tracks and cultural programs provided insights into the technology and resources that help Russia safely drill amidst challenges such as permafrost and energy transition.”
Olaniyan further noted the opportunity for roundtable discussions with professionals from Rosneft, one of Russia’s leading oil and gas companies, and highlighted internship opportunities with industry leaders. “The cultural programs and road trips added dynamism to the summer experience, allowing us to learn from fellow participants and gain insights into solving current challenges in the oil industry,” she said.
Covenant University is eager to strengthen its relationship with the Industrial University of Tyumen and continue fostering global collaborations in the field of petroleum engineering. The institution continues to prioritize research and quality teaching, aiming to deliver value to students and address global energy challenges through enhanced technical prowess and international cooperation.
