Dowen College, Lagos, has celebrated a remarkable academic milestone with a 96.7 per cent credit pass rate in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and multiple international university scholarships for its graduating students.
The achievement was announced during the school’s 28th Founder’s Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony held recently on its Lekki campus.
Principal Dr. Adebisi Layiwola expressed gratitude for the school’s steady growth since its founding by Dr. Olumide O. Phillips and Dr. (Mrs.) Toyin Phillips nearly three decades ago.
“Our theme for the year, ‘One School, One Vision, Endless Possibilities,’ truly came alive,” Layiwola said. “The Class of 2025 achieved outstanding results—96.7 per cent credit passes, 76 per cent distinctions, and 36.2 per cent A1 grades.”
According to her, several graduating students secured scholarships and admission offers from top universities in the United States and Canada, including New York Institute of Technology, Loyola University, University at Albany, Colorado State University, and Simon Fraser University, among others.
Dowen College students also excelled in extracurricular activities, clinching first place in the AISEN Mathematics Competition and the Cordros Debate Competition, as well as winning gold medals at the World Games in London and the Germany Arnsberg International Swimming Competition.
The school’s commitment to student safety and well-being was reaffirmed through the Lagos State Government’s Beacon of Safety Award, valid for three years.
Unveiling plans for the next academic session, Dr. Layiwola announced that the 2025/2026 school year would adopt the theme “Excel Beyond Boundaries.”
“We are integrating technical, entrepreneurial, and leadership training into our curriculum to prepare our students as global citizens and lifelong learners,” she stated, while appreciating parents, teachers, and alumni for their steadfast support.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Wale Agbeyangi, Group Managing Director and CEO of Cordros Capital Limited, delivered an inspiring keynote address urging students to push beyond fear and limitations.
> “Boundaries exist in every area of life—some are physical, others internal like fear or doubt,” he said. “But boundaries are not permanent walls; they are challenges to be overcome.”
He praised the dedication of teachers and parents in shaping future leaders, emphasizing that excellence is “forged through persistence and courage.”
The event also featured musical performances, award presentations, and prayers of thanksgiving as the school community celebrated nearly three decades of academic and moral excellence.
