The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has called for a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, urging a shift towards skill acquisition to enhance the employability of Nigerian youth and drive national development.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, and his delegation to the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, Dr. Alausa described Nigerian youth as the nation’s most valuable resource. He emphasized their potential to contribute significantly to education, healthcare, and economic growth.
Dr. Alausa proposed the introduction of key initiatives within the NYSC structure. These include the “Teacher’s Call” to deploy holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) as temporary teachers in underserved communities, and the “Rural Health Corps” aimed at mobilizing medically trained corps members to provide essential services in rural areas.
The Minister also advocated for a reform of the NYSC orientation programme to include vocational, entrepreneurial, agricultural, and ICT training. He further suggested extending the service year beyond the current 12-month duration to give corps members ample time to develop practical skills that would enhance their relevance in the job market.
“To move this nation forward, we must harness the energy and innovation of our youth by equipping them with relevant skills,” Dr. Alausa stated.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, commended the NYSC for its pivotal role in upholding academic standards, particularly in the context of increasing transnational education activities.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, highlighted the shared vision between the Ministry and the NYSC, expressing confidence in the synergy’s potential to transform the nation’s education landscape.
Brigadier General Nafiu expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s continued support and outlined recent NYSC reforms, including the development of a pre-departure database system to curb certificate fraud.
The meeting ended with a reaffirmation of commitment from both parties to drive youth-centered transformation and national progress.
