The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, bringing a short break for schools and academic institutions across the country.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the declaration is in recognition of the successful completion of Ramadan by Muslim faithful.
With the holidays falling within the academic calendar, schools are expected to temporarily suspend classes, allowing students and educators to participate in the celebrations and reflect on the values of discipline, sacrifice, and self-restraint emphasized during the fasting period.
The minister encouraged Muslims to carry forward the lessons of Ramadan—particularly peace, tolerance, and generosity—into their daily lives, noting their importance in shaping responsible citizens.
He also urged Nigerians, including members of the education sector, to use the period to promote unity and extend goodwill within their communities, especially to the less privileged.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to fostering national cohesion, while wishing all Muslim faithful a peaceful and fulfilling Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
