The Federal Government has announced plans to establish functional fire stations within public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to improve emergency response and protect lives and public assets on campuses.
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Adeyemi, disclosed this on Wednesday during the decoration of newly promoted senior officers of the service at its headquarters in Abuja.
Adeyemi said the initiative, being pursued through strategic engagement with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), would cover universities, polytechnics and colleges of education nationwide.
He noted that many tertiary institutions currently operate without dedicated fire stations, relying on external responders who often arrive late due to distance, traffic congestion and limited resources.
According to him, locating fire stations within campuses would significantly reduce response time and help prevent avoidable loss of lives and property.
“Through strategic engagement with TETFund, plans are underway to establish functional fire stations within public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to safeguard lives and national investments in education,” Adeyemi said.
He explained that the move forms part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning the Federal Fire Service for improved efficiency, preparedness and effective public safety delivery in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.
Speaking on the promotion exercise, Adeyemi said 2,620 officers were elevated after a rigorous and transparent process conducted by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board.
He urged the newly promoted officers to see their elevation as a call to higher responsibility, stressing the need for discipline, professionalism, sound judgment and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
The planned campus fire stations are expected to strengthen safety systems in learning environments and ensure faster response during emergencies.
