The immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), James Adio, has regained his freedom days after he was remanded by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.
The development was announced on Friday by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde, who described Adio’s release as a victory for justice.
In a post on his X handle, Akinteye said he had personally spoken with the former FUOYE student leader and confirmed that he was in good spirits.
“I am pleased to announce that Comrade Adio, the immediate past FUOYE SUG President, who was remanded in prison, has regained his freedom.
“I just spoke with him personally, and I am delighted to confirm that he is in high spirits,” he wrote.
The NANS president commended the Chairman of the association’s Joint Campus Committee (JCC) in Ekiti State for his commitment and leadership throughout the period of Adio’s detention.
He also praised the NANS National Head of Administration for his dedication and efforts towards securing the release of the former FUOYE SUG president.
Akinteye said the development reinforced the importance of unity and solidarity among students.
“This victory is a reminder that when we stand together in solidarity, justice can prevail,” he added.
Before his release, NANS had directed its members in Ekiti State to begin mobilisation for peaceful protests following Adio’s remand by the Magistrate Court.
The student body had described the remand as a miscarriage of justice, alleging that the former FUOYE SUG president was detained over a matter he personally instituted before the court.
NANS maintained that Adio was the complainant in the case and had no criminal charges against him, while accusing the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the presiding magistrate of turning the matter against him.
The association had threatened peaceful protests at the Ekiti State High Court, Magistrate Court and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions while demanding his release.
However, as of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding the release of the former FUOYE SUG president had not been officially disclosed by the court or the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice.
