A biology teacher at Omole Senior Grammar School, Lagos State, Adeola Akinsulure, has earned global recognition after emerging as one of the top 50 teachers worldwide at the Global Teacher Prize 2026, organised by the Varkey Foundation.
A statement made available to Saturday PUNCH said the finalists were selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications across 139 countries, highlighting the highly competitive nature of the award.
The Global Teacher Prize celebrates educators whose work goes beyond the classroom to make lasting impact on society.
Akinsulure was recognised for her innovative approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, particularly her efforts in mentoring girls, promoting environmental sustainability, and empowering students in low-resource schools through creativity, innovation and exposure to global opportunities.
According to the statement, education stakeholders have urged the Nigerian Government, especially the Lagos State Government, to formally honour Akinsulure for the achievement, noting that it places Nigeria prominently on the global education map.
Reacting, Akinsulure expressed gratitude to her mentors, partners, colleagues and students, describing their support as crucial to her journey.
The GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize is a Varkey Foundation initiative organised in collaboration with UNESCO.
