Lagos State University (LASU) is set to welcome the global academic community as it hosts the International Conference of Community Psychology (ICCP) from August 28 to September 7, 2026.
The conference, themed “Gathering in the Motherland: Celebrating Ways of the Waters and Reconnecting to the Source,” is expected to spotlight Africa’s role in reshaping how psychology responds to human development challenges on the continent.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, said the conference presents a rare opportunity for Africa to contribute meaningfully to global research, innovation, and policy discussions in Community Psychology.
She explained that Community Psychology focuses on how individuals interact with their social, cultural, economic and physical environments, placing greater emphasis on community well-being rather than only individual problems.
According to her, the conference will promote solutions that encourage collective growth, social justice, and sustainable development at community and societal levels.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the event will host over 700 participants, with strong backing from respected bodies such as the Pan-African Psychology Union, Nigerian Psychological Association, and the Psychological Society of South Africa.
Also speaking, the conference convener, Prof. Andrew Zanami, alongside Dr. Moshood Olanrewaju, noted that the programme has already secured endorsements and partnerships from several institutions, underscoring its global relevance.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello assured participants of a safe, well-organised and memorable experience, stating that LASU has made adequate arrangements for security, transportation, accommodation and entertainment throughout the conference period.
She added that hosting ICCP in Lagos — Africa’s commercial and cultural hub — will further position the city and LASU as centres of knowledge production, innovation and intellectual leadership.
Describing ICCP as more than an academic gathering, she said the conference is an invitation to experience Lagos and LASU as spaces of hospitality, openness and global engagement.
Meanwhile, the Local Organising Committee, led by its Alternate Chair, Prof. Temitayo Adewuyi, has called on multinational organisations, philanthropists and stakeholders to support LASU in ensuring a successful hosting of the landmark event.
