As an intern at Segilola Resources Operating Limited, Nigeria’s first large-scale commercial gold mine, I’ve had the invaluable opportunity to learn firsthand about ore mining activities and grade control processes in an open-pit operation.
Ore mining here is a highly coordinated effort involving drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling—but what truly ensures success is effective grade control.
I’ve been actively involved in activities like blast hole sampling, ore spotting, field mapping, and data reconciliation, all of which are essential in defining ore boundaries and reducing dilution.
Working alongside experienced engineers and geologists, I’ve seen how data from block models and field observations is used to guide real-time decisions in ore extraction.
The goal is simple: maximize gold recovery while maintaining ore quality.
This internship continues to sharpen my practical knowledge of mine planning and operational geology.
Grateful to be learning and contributing at a site setting the pace for responsible gold mining in Nigeria.
One thing I’m reminded of: “Learning never stops, either in class or on the field.”
I’m looking forward to what the coming weeks hold!
