Liberia’s Ministry of Education has announced the removal of registration fees for children enrolling in public schools from Kindergarten through Grade 6 ahead of the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Minister of Education, Dr Jarso Maley Jallah, disclosed the policy during a regular press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism.
According to the Minister, the initiative is aimed at removing financial barriers that prevent children from enrolling in school and ensuring that more Liberian children have access to basic education.
The government said public schools will receive financial support to implement the policy through the Liberia EXCEL Project, Equitable Funding Formula and the Government’s long-term Education Investment Strategy.
Schools warned against unauthorised charges
Dr Jallah warned public schools against replacing the abolished registration fees with other unauthorised charges.
To strengthen monitoring and accountability, the Ministry said it is deploying 160 monitoring and evaluation interns across the country. The interns will work with District Education Officers, County Education Officers and other relevant authorities to monitor compliance and report violations.
The Minister also reminded private and other school operators that they must obtain valid authorisation from the Ministry of Education before operating.
The Ministry’s digitised school permitting system is available through permit.moe.gov.lr.
Parents urged to report violations
The government urged parents and guardians to enrol their children in school and report any public school that demands registration fees for Kindergarten through Grade 6.
The Ministry provided the following contact numbers for complaints and clarification:
077-721-2197
088-656-5264
The policy forms part of Liberia’s broader efforts to improve access to basic education, reduce the financial burden on families and strengthen accountability within the country’s education system.
