The Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Honourable Francis Folley MP, on Tuesday visited Kamuzu Primary School, in Mchinji District to appreciate the progress being made in the implementation of the National Mathematics Curriculum Reform (NMCR) programme and the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) aimed at improving foundational learning.
During the visit, Folley expressed satisfaction with the positive strides being registered, noting that the initiatives are critical in addressing low learning outcomes in foundational numeracy and literacy among learners.
He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening foundational learning as a key pillar for achieving Malawi 2063, emphasizing that quality education remains central to national development.
The Deputy British High Commissioner, Ben Nicholson said they have prioritized foundational learning, investing 37 million British pounds to support early grade teaching and the implementation of a modernized mathematics curriculum aimed at improving learning outcomes and is recognized as an effective intervention globally.
Headteacher for the school, Steve Malijani, said the initiative of teaching at the right level has led to improved performance in literacy and numeracy among learners in grades 1 to 4.
The pilot phase of the NMCR and TaRL supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is being implemented in 80 schools across Mchinji with plans to scale up to other districts.
