Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has drawn fresh public attention following the circulation of a video showing a physical confrontation between a 100-level female student and a female lecturer.
The incident, which reportedly occurred along a lecture hall walkway, was captured in a video that surfaced on social media platform X on Thursday. In the footage, the yet-to-be-identified student is seen repeatedly attempting to charge at the lecturer while being restrained by security operatives.
Despite efforts to hold her back, the student continued to shout and demand to be released. At a point, the visibly agitated lecturer shoved the student in the face and urged security personnel to let go of her, further escalating the confrontation.
The altercation attracted the attention of nearby students, many of whom were seen recording the incident on their mobile phones.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the clash remains unclear. The management of Obafemi Awolowo University has also not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the viral video has generated widespread reactions online. While some social media users condemned the student’s actions, describing them as disrespectful and inappropriate, others expressed concern over what they described as the misuse of authority by some lecturers.
Several commentators called for mutual respect between lecturers and students, stressing the need for institutional policies that protect both parties and ensure proper conduct within the academic environment.
The university community and the public now await an official response from OAU authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and outline any disciplinary measures, if applicable.
