The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has passed a vote of no confidence in the Head of National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Amos Dangut, demanding his immediate removal alongside the management of the council.
The resolution was reached during the 87th NANS National Senate Sitting/Congress held at Yobe State University, Damaturu.
According to the students’ body, the decision followed what it described as systemic failures under WAEC’s leadership, including the widespread failure in the recently released 2025 WAEC English Language results, which were allegedly conducted under questionable conditions — with some students writing late into the night.
Other issues raised included allegations of gross mismanagement, result serialization problems, and malpractice allegedly aided by some WAEC officials.
NANS had earlier demanded a re-sit of the English Language exam to restore fairness and credibility. However, WAEC’s refusal to grant the request, coupled with its “adamant stance,” further deepened students’ grievances.
Speaking after the congress, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, NANS Director of Administration and Planning, described the mass failure as unacceptable, alleging it was a deliberate attempt to jeopardise the future of Nigerian students.
“The intentional release of varying percentages of results within 48 hours of the official announcement is uncalled for and amounts to gross misconduct on WAEC’s part,” he said.
NANS therefore declared its plan to stage a nationwide protest to press for Dr. Dangut’s removal through the Federal Ministry of Education.
“In light of these irregularities and WAEC’s insensitivity, we are declaring a nationwide protest. Nigerian students deserve transparency, fairness, and a credible assessment of their performance,” Uthman declared.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to defending the interests of Nigerian students and vowed not to relent until its demands are met.
