The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has confirmed the disbursement of ₦1.33 billion to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The Fund disclosed that a total sum of ₦1,326,550,000 was released to the institution on January 19, 2026, to cover approved student loans for 6,308 eligible UNILAG students under the NELFUND programme.
NELFUND explained that the list of beneficiaries was generated from verified institutional data submitted during the application and validation process, in line with established guidelines for the student loan scheme.
The Fund reiterated that disbursements to institutions are intended to enable students to proceed with registration and academic activities without disruption, adding that it works closely with tertiary institutions to ensure funds are applied appropriately.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to transparency and student welfare.
“NELFUND remains fully committed to ensuring that approved student loan funds are disbursed promptly and applied appropriately. We are engaging partner institutions to address any administrative gaps so that no eligible student is disadvantaged,” he said.
NELFUND added that it is currently engaging officials of the University of Lagos to reconcile beneficiary lists, ensure timely application of funds to students’ accounts, and improve communication with students.
The Fund urged students and stakeholders to rely on official information from NELFUND and their institutions, noting that students with inquiries should contact their school’s bursary or student affairs office while reconciliation efforts continue.
