The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has declared that Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is the future of education globally. Speaking at the 27th Matriculation Ceremony, which was held both virtually and physically at various NOUN study centres across the country, Peters welcomed the new students and underscored the transformative potential of ODL in bridging gaps to quality education.
“Our mode of education empowers students to learn at their own pace, balancing education with work and family responsibilities,” Peters remarked. “NOUN is bridging the gap in access to quality higher education, ensuring inclusivity for all Nigerians, regardless of age, location, or circumstance.”
Peters referred to NOUN’s ODL model as “revolutionary,” especially in a world where digital innovation is increasingly driving the need for flexible learning systems. He highlighted that NOUN differentiates itself from traditional universities by offering unparalleled flexibility, without compromising on academic quality. The university’s programmes are rigorously accredited, and its graduates are highly employable.
The new intake for the academic session includes 18,106 students for undergraduate programmes, 5,196 for postgraduate programmes, 10 for MPhil, and 32 for PhD programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized that NOUN’s model has proven that education can transcend geographical barriers, making learning a right, not a privilege. “This system proves that educational excellence does not require physical presence in a classroom,” he added.
He urged the new students to strive for excellence and transform their lives through education. “Let this moment be a commitment to not just meet but exceed the standards set before you. NOUN is not just about completing a degree; it’s about transforming lives through education.”
The ceremony concluded with the administration of the matriculation oath by NOUN’s Registrar, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, formally inducting the new students into the university.
